13: Re-Enforcement

The trip to the building site was a journey filled with hazards, and although any trek from one side of the Broken Sector to the other was treacherous, this particular route was avoided by every sane soul left alive.

Anyone wishing to make their way to Cardinal Point needed to pass Senper Square, which presented a grave threat to anyone who wasn’t prepared for what awaited them. Considering there was no other way to the Point, Grey had insisted on leading the convoy personally. Being one of the rare few to come to this place and live to tell the tale, he’d organised the team to make the journey during the early hours of the morning. The fanatics that had claimed Senper Square were violent, zealous, and far beyond reason. Thankfully, the thick cloud cover would drastically reduce their visibility as they navigated the road to the west of the square.

With such a large convoy to transport, their choices for getting vehicles through the Broken Sector were minimal as most roads in this sector were destroyed.

Grey sighed. He knew that he’d have to deal with the cultists one day, but there would be casualties, and he didn’t feel comfortable committing to losing anyone on his team, nor the innocents who’d been swindled on the cultist side.

Grey craned his neck upwards as he passed under the archway welcoming them all to Senper Square. To the right was their road leading towards a series of underpasses, and in the distance, the Mortaroy Tunnel. To the left was another route, but this one would take them into the heart of the square, and in all likelihood, their deaths.

As usual, his eyes were drawn to the massive mineral pool in the middle of each road. Spanning one kilometre in length and half that in width, the pool was once a place of quiet reflection for many citizens. Now, it was scorched, and the once majestic statue of Tobias Finlay, the Pioneer responsible for Menilax’s infrastructure, was now a crumbling ruin caked with moss and ferns.

His eyes followed the path to the left, all the way to the edge of the square, where numerous buildings surrounded the road. Once occupied by humble shopkeepers and tradespeople, now it was housed by the Ashen Faith. Overzealous cultists comprised their membership, convinced that their powerful deities, the Pioneers, would rise from the grave and destroy those who’d wavered from their holy tenants.

Aiden, the luminary of the faith, had taken residence inside the old Pioneer temple sitting at the apex of the road surrounded by the old businesses. Despite the dangers around the square, Aiden held the territory with the tenacity only a religious leader could muster. Such determination helped him construct the cult, employing his natural charisma to instil his followers with the unshakable belief in him and his tenants.

All his life he’d known what the Pioneers were, but it seemed like this logic hadn’t been passed down to ordinary people. He’d learned quickly that the rest of the world thought highly of Vale’s ancient protectors, much to his dismay.
